A WORD ABOUT TRUMP
People ask about the name. They do. All the time. They come up and say, “Where does that name come from?” Very interesting question. Great question, actually.
Now a lot of people think it’s just about cards. You know—the trump card. The one that wins the hand. The one you play when the other suits run out. It beats everything. Very powerful card. Everyone understands that part.
But the word is older than that. Much older.
In parts of Britain and Ireland they used the word trump for a musical instrument. Small instrument. Metal frame, little vibrating tongue. You hold it to your teeth and pluck it. Makes a twanging sound. Very simple. Very ancient.
Some people call it a mouth harp or a jaw harp. Others called it a Jew’s harp. But another name for it—going back quite a ways—was simply a trump.
And the way the instrument works is interesting. Very interesting.
The metal tongue vibrates, but the sound doesn’t really come alive until it hits the mouth. The mouth becomes the chamber. The amplifier. The thing that shapes the tone.
So the instrument makes the vibration, but the mouth gives it the sound. That’s how the old “trump” worked.
And sometimes in public life you see something similar. A person steps forward and suddenly there’s a sound—an energy, a vibration—and it spreads everywhere. Very powerful resonance.
Now whether that vibration belongs to the man himself… or whether the man is simply the instrument through which something larger is heard. . .
Well. . .
That’s for history to decide.
Because sometimes a name doesn’t just identify the player. Sometimes the name becomes the instrument—and what you’re hearing is the sound of something much bigger passing through.
