ON THE ARITHMETIC OF REMOVAL

Editor’s Note:

This is a brief inquiry into numerical expressions currently employed against the 47th Presidency. The reader is invited to do the math and follow along—for reasons that will become apparent, it all adds up, much to our amazement.

Mason Freeman:

I first noticed it on a piece of cardboard. A protest sign. Plain enough :

No verbs. No explanation. Just numbers, as if the sentence had been reduced to its skeleton and the flesh deemed unnecessary.

Now, 47 is straightforward: the number assigned to the current Trump presidency—the ordinal standing in for the man.

And 25—if you follow me—is almost certainly a reference to the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, the constitutional mechanism concerning presidential inability and removal.

So the sign reads, in translation:

Invoke the 25th against the 47th.

This, in turn, reminded me of an earlier phrase that circulated with similar efficiency:

Here the decoding is older, and stranger.

“86” is American slang—attested since at least the 1930s—meaning to eject, remove, or refuse service. Its origin is disputed: diner shorthand for “out of stock,” rhyming slang with nix, possibly even tied to specific establishments. But all explanations converge on one idea:

86 means removal.

So:

86 47>Remove Trump, the 47th President.

At this point, any reasonable person would stop. I did not. I turned to numerology.

First System: Pythagorean Reduction (1–9)

T = 2

R = 9

U = 3

M = 4

P = 7

Total:

2 + 9 + 3 + 4 + 7 = 25

So:

TRUMP = 25

This I realized would be an amazing coincidence if it wasn’t the number of the amendment to remove a President. Yes, an amazing fact in itself. Admit it!

But I pressed on.

Second System: Alphabetical (Ordinal)

(A = 1. . . Z = 26)

T = 20

R = 18

U = 21

M = 13

P = 16

Total:

20 + 18 + 21 + 13 + 16 = 88

So now: TRUMP = 88!

Now—if you follow me—this is where things begin to. . . align.

The number 88 is also used, in certain coded contexts, to represent “Heil Hitler” (H being the 8th letter, doubled).

So I tested it.

Control Test

Using the same alphabetical system:

HEIL = 8 + 5 + 9 + 12 = 34

HITLER = 8 + 9 + 20 + 12 + 5 + 18 = 72

Total: 34 + 72 = 106

—Which is not 88.

But—if you follow me—

1 + 0 + 6 = 7

Now return:

TRUMP (Pythagorean) = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7

TRUMP (ordinal) = 88 → 8 + 8 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7

So both systems reduce to:

—7—

Seven! I paused here.

Because this was not incorrect.

Every step was valid. (We invite the reader to doublecheck the math)

Reduction of the Original Numbers

86 → 8 + 6 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5

25 → 2 + 5 = 7

47 → 4 + 7 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2

Und so now we have: 5, 7, 2

I wrote them down.

A reduced cipher of removal, flanked by another reduced cipher of the same amendment—if you view it backwards. Both closing on the reduced ordinal of the man himself. 7!

A sequence. A hemming in?—Or possibly a sentence.

At this point, I realized something.

Not about the numbers. About the method.

Because every operation was correct. Every reduction legitimate. Every relationship mathematically sound.

And yet—the meaning was becoming more certain the further I moved away from anything anyone had actually said.

The numbers, I noticed, had not moved.

Only I had.

I presented these findings one evening.

A man in a yellow gaiter listened carefully, then asked:

“So. . .all the math checks out?”

“Yes.”

“And what does it prove?”

I considered this.

“It proves,” I said slowly, “that if you follow the numbers long enough. . .”

Pause.

“. . .they will begin to follow you.”
