—Vito Haeckler finds some unexpected common ground in the used-car market.—
A WORD ABOUT THE REPUTATION OF THE SUBARU
In the 1990s, Subaru discovered that its practical, all-wheel-drive cars had already developed an unusually loyal following among lesbians. The company wisely decided not to question good fortune and began advertising directly to them, often with clever double meanings and inside references. The campaign proved remarkably successful.

Vito Haeckler knew none of this when he bought his Subaru. To him, it was still what Subarus had long been: an inexpensive way of putting four driven wheels under a man who occasionally needed them.
There was, however, a certain accidental logic to the pairing. Subaru appealed to people who appreciated
good handling,
fine lines,
agreeable curves,
just the right amount of room
and an excellent view from the front.
On these matters Vito discovered that he and the demographic Subaru had so successfully courted required remarkably little persuasion. This made Vito precisely the sort of spokesman the Committee was looking for.
They hired the Council. The Council supplied Vito. The rest is advertising.
