—Mrs. Begonia Contretemps investigates an extraordinary claim made on behalf of the human brain.

Dispatched to America by the NVZ to observe the habits, institutions and occasional peculiarities of the Republic, Mrs. Begonia Contretemps serves as the Council’s visiting field investigator.
Her instructions are broad. John St. Evola occasionally makes them broader.
THE ASSIGNMENT
John St. Evola waited until Mrs. Begonia Contretemps had settled into her chair at the Gist & Tangent before sliding a folder across the table.
“Your next field assignment.”
Begonia regarded the folder cautiously. Experience had taught her that Council folders seldom contained anything improved by opening them.
“What am I looking for?”
John tapped the folder.
“Evidence that the human brain is conscious.”
Begonia looked at him.
“The gelatinous matter inside the skull.”
“You mean my brain?”
“But everyone knows the brain is conscious.”
“Excellent,” said John. “That should make it easier to establish.”
Begonia accepted the folder.

THE LIVING ORGAN
Begonia’s investigation led backward before it led forward.
At New York’s Rockefeller Institute in the 1930s, surgeon Alexis Carrel and aviator-inventor Charles Lindbergh developed an ingenious glass perfusion apparatus capable of sustaining animal organs outside the bodies to which they had formerly belonged.
The machine circulated the fluids necessary to keep living tissue living.
This presented Begonia with an unexpectedly basic problem.
Something could be removed from the creature of which it had been a part—and nevertheless remain alive.
She made her first entry.
ALIVE and WHOLE are apparently different things.
The brain, she noted, was also an organ.

THE EXPERIENCING BRAIN
In Montreal, Begonia encountered the work of neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield.
During operations on conscious patients, Penfield could electrically stimulate areas of the exposed cerebral cortex and produce movements, sensations and sometimes remarkably vivid reported experiences.
Electricity went in. Something happened. A person reported experiencing it. This seemed promising.
Unfortunately, Begonia could find neurons, electrical activity and reports of experience—but nobody could point to the experience itself.
She added another entry.
BRAIN ACTIVITY: OBSERVED.
CONSCIOUSNESS: REPORTED.

THE BRAIN WITHOUT THE BODY
The trail next brought Begonia to the extraordinary work of neurosurgeon Robert J. White.
White’s experiments pushed the problem much further.

If circulation could sustain organs, what happened when the organ being sustained was the very organ alleged to be conscious?
Here Begonia’s investigation became uncomfortable.
A kidney was clearly a kidney. A heart was clearly a heart. But if one preserved a brain, what exactly had one preserved?
An organ?
A mind?
The individual?
Begonia discovered that the questions multiplied considerably faster than the answers.

THE BURNED-OVER DISTRICT
Begonia continued into western New York.
This was appropriate country for her assignment.
The old Burned-over District had spent much of the nineteenth century entertaining extraordinary questions concerning souls, spirits, revelation and the invisible world.
Near Lily Dale, the proposition became particularly interesting.
For generations people there had entertained the possibility that consciousness might continue after the brain had ceased living.
Begonia stopped over that one.
If consciousness could exist without the brain, that was interesting.
But John’s question ran in the opposite direction.
Was there evidence that the brain itself was conscious while it was alive?
She drove on.

THE LIGHTS IN THE FIELD
Toward dusk, Begonia noticed a Ferris wheel above the trees. A hand-painted sign announced an end-of-summer volunteer firemen’s carnival. There were sausages, fried dough, bingo, children carrying improbable quantities of spun sugar and a fire engine polished beyond any reasonable operational requirement.
And at the far end of the midway stood a familiar figure.
Gus Groening.
Behind him was a tent. Above it was an enormous painted banner.

Begonia stared at him.
“Gus.”
“Mrs. Contretemps.”
“You’re investigating the brain?”
“Somebody ought to.”
Against her better judgment, she went inside.
Under theatrical illumination sat an anatomical model of a human brain.
Gus stood beside it with a pointer.

“Gus, surely you’re not suggesting that the brain isn’t conscious.”
“I’m not suggesting anything,” he said. “That’s why there’s a question mark.”
Begonia turned to the first exhibit.

Begonia looked at the anatomical model again.
That, she had to admit, was literally true.
She moved to the next exhibit.

Begonia moved along.

Begonia’s expression changed slightly.
The next placard was less reassuring.

Begonia returned to the specimen beneath the glass.
It was an odd thing when considered without sentiment: soft biological matter enclosed for its entire working life inside a rigid container, receiving information through attached sensory equipment and responding through other attached equipment.
And there remained one particularly awkward problem.

“The brain doesn’t even speak,” Begonia said.
Gus nodded.
“It needs accessories, you know, peripherals.”
Outside, the carnival was beginning to empty.
Begonia stood before the illuminated exhibit. She had found living tissue. She had found neurons firing. She had found electrical activity, memory, sensation, prediction, language and behavior.
Everywhere she went, people confidently attributed all of these things to consciousness.
But whenever Begonia tried to inspect consciousness itself, she encountered another report generated by the same gelatinous organ whose claim she had been sent to investigate.
There was one final placard.

THE REPORT
Back at the Gist & Tangent, John looked up as Begonia entered.
“Well?”
“I found a brain.”
“That wasn’t the assignment. Was it conscious?”
Begonia placed the folder on his desk.
“It claims to be.”
John considered this. Begonia removed her coat. Neither mentioned that the conversation had been conducted entirely through peripheral devices operated by two specimens of gelatinous matter sealed inside bone casings.
